What is wizard rock?

The concept of wizard rock is simple: music based on or around the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling. The first wrock song ever was "Ode to Harry", released by the Switchblade Kittens in December 2000, yet it was Harry and the Potters who took the idea of writing songs about Harry and made it popular. Some bands, like The Moaning Myrtles and Draco and the Malfoys, write songs from a single character's point of view, while others, like Ministry of Magic and The Butterbeer Experience, are more broad. Still others, like The Parselmouths, occupy the middle ground.

Wizard rock is not just a way to share Harry Potter with others; albums are often created and sold purely to make money for charity. The Harry Potter Alliance, co-founded by Paul and Joe DeGeorge of Harry and the Potters, is a non-profit organisation self-described as "an army of fans, activists, nerdfighters, teenagers, wizards and muggles dedicated to fighting for social justice with the greatest weapon we have – love". In January 2010, after hearing about the devastating Haiti earthquakes, The Harry Potter Alliance helped raise enough money to send five planes' worth of medical supplies to help out.

Many wrock bands also give back to Harry Potter by performing in libraries and bookshops. Most notably, the motto of The Remus Lupins is, "Fight Evil, Read Books". Some more wrock bands not mentioned above include Oliver Boyd and the Remembralls, The Hermione Crookshanks Experience, Split Seven Ways, Let's Lumos!, Roonil Wazlib, The Whomping Willows, Swish and Flick, Remus and the Lupins and Hawthorn and Holly.

"He's the one they call Harry Potter
A lightning scar and hair like his father's
With a task that only he can do
He'll keep fighting 'til the fighting's through"
